Morning Glory

by Lisa-Marie Sanders

“May there be many summer mornings when,

with what pleasure, what joy,

you enter harbors you’re seeing for the first time.”

When I read these words, I imagine waking as a child in the summer: anticipation rising up inside me. A new day! Exploration, freedom and fun. What joy!

I chose bright colors and happy fabrics to mimic carefree energy and the variety of joy in our lives. The darker colors remind me of earth or sleep, the ground beneath the dreams of the day. As the colors emerge, I feel an upwelling, near explosion as joy reaches the surface.

Morning Glory is fused applique using cotton and batik commercial and hand dyed fabrics. It is quilted with cotton and polyester threads. It measures 43” H by 34.5” W.
